This project is the conversion of a space (located on the ground floor of an apartment building) from its previous use into a residential. The main challenge was to create a remarkable identity and give added value to what could be considered a limitation. The character of the project is the creation of a peaceful space, reflecting its cleanliness, hygiene and airiness.
Understanding structure and limitations was the prime considerations. Its plan was subdivided into different small rooms that made it unsuitable for contemporary living. The internal renovations focuse on removing most of these partition walls to provide interconnected rooms. Two walls have been removed, one for opening the space and flood the interiors with light as much as possible while the other is substituted by an integrated unit that absorbes some amenities on both sides (living area and sleeping area). By organizing elements into the perimeter we obtain more empty space, purity and spatial definition while their visual presence gets reduced. At the same time we ensoure plenty of storage space. Functional, organized, easy to maneuver and visually pleasant.
The main scheme of the project gives now an open, spacious feeling. The apartment contains two bedrooms, an open - plan living area and a bathroom. The living room area is designed in open layout and the two bedrooms and the bathroom are accessed though an existed vestibule connected with the entrance that leads directly into the living space. That last one gives access outdoors to a private garden proper for the cultivation of plants, like for example the existed lemon and orange trees. Additionaly, the garden can be used for relaxing and sunbathing, drying clothes, housing pets etc.
The palette is neutral, featuring a lot of white, in a way that some backdrops allow to display prefered objects, plants and paints that can stand out. So walls and ceilings are painted white, complemented by white kitchen units, in order to emphasise the volumes and to unify the space. The storage space of the kitchen (including the essential appliances) is projected on the TV appliances witch utilities are hidden inside them. This homogeneity creates an aesthetically pleasing effect. The outcome is a series of monocromatic and pure elements that produce a pattern of light and shadow. By providing a balance of natural and artificial lighting, some espedients are used to underline the dynamism of space. Selected wood touches contrasts with the white elements and the light wood floor. Beyond the kitchen, a dining area is partially integrated to the core of the framework (with storage underneath) and with an extentable table create a warm and cozy space. This space is perfectly suitable not only for meals, but additionally forms an active social environment, a meeting point of passions, intimacy and friendships (play cards with friends, have a drink etc.) At the same time, can embrace personal activities like studying and working on laptop. Constitutes an unique space with the living room and the kitchen; a space that is open in everyday life, sociality, meditation and living.
